U 17 North Region Schools’ play in Edinburgh

The U17 North Region schools’ basketball team travelled to Edinburgh as part of their preparation for the Irish Schools Inter Regional Tournament toimg-20161101-wa0007-1 be held in Bray, Co Wicklow on Sunday 13th November.  The team played West Lothian Wolves, Inverness City and Falkirk Fury.  The pre-tournament competition was very valuable for the squad and gave them an opportunity to put plays together and get to know each other.  They had success in all three games defeating West Lothian Wolves 81 – 60,  Inverness City  69 – 45 and Falkirk Fury 81 – 60.

The scores reflected the superiority of the North Region in each of the games and apart from the Inverness City team the other two squads were good quality U 18 opposition. Credit must go to the team for a very solid defensive effort that made the difference in all games. The North Region played a defensive pressure game throughout and kept the opposition out of their comfort zone. The pressure game brought frequent scores from turn overs and set offence was mobile and incisive, giving good scoring opportunities.  These opportunities were taken by:  Niall McGinnity –  46 points, Mark Hayes – 47 points,  Connor Mason – 32 points, who all top scored for the team in the three games.

North Region Schools’ Basketball would like to thank Eamon McKillop of the Spar Ballymena for sponsorship of team tracksuits for the visit to Edinburgh, and for the upcoming Irish finals.img-20161101-wa0009
