A Successful 3×3 Weekend for Team NI with Luc Vergoossen

Basketball NI had the privilege of welcoming, Netherlands Basketball Performance Manager and FIBA delegate, Luc Vergoossen, to Belfast for a weekend of learning about 3×3 Basketball with Team NI squads, coaches and the BNI Community.

On Friday the Team NI U17 players attended a 3×3 workshop at Ulster University, Jordanstown. Luc introduced the game of 3×3 and then ran through practical in game scenarios and concluded with in house 3×3 scrimmages. Players very quickly understand the high intensity nature of the game. Team NI Boys U17 assistant head coach and 3×3 specialist Rolandas Bartkus was clear about the benefits of the workshop, “This is what we need – People like, Luc Vergoossen, coming to Belfast to share his knowledge and experience with our basketball community .”

On Saturday it was the Team NI U15’s turn with players creating their FIBA 3×3 profiles and began with a classroom presentation covering the fundamentals of the game. The practical session then repeated Friday’s format with the benefit of a longer session which enabled players to really begin to develop their understanding of the game.

Team NI U15 Boys Head Coach, Michael McCabe had this to add, “Both players and coaches had the privilege on Saturday to learn from Luc. The session was delivered in a fun, engaging environment, and players had an opportunity to become more competent with the format and more tactically aware with the 3×3 brand of Basketball. We are looking forward to implementing our learnings in the upcoming sessions.”

The workshops concluded on Sunday with a session open to all BNI players aged 15 to 18 who had an interest in 3×3 basketball. Luc again began with a classroom session on the fundamentals of 3×3 and explained the fun changes that the short exciting, paced format brings. They then took to the courts to experience the game and enjoy the freedom 3×3 can bring.

The weekend was a really positive experience for players and coaches with invaluable learning from Luc. We would like to thank Luc for his helpful insights and time alongside the players, parents and coaches for their time.

Andy Gill, pathway performance coordinator stated ‘3×3 is a growing global derivative of basketball and actually stands as a format in its own right. This was an important weekend of learning for both coaches and players  and we see our development in this game as a key part of our performance strategy. We are indebted to the Commonwealth Games Federation for allowing us to bring Luc over and ignite our strategy for future 3×3 success’.
