Newry Fliers win Plate Final

Newry Fliers secured the win over North Star in the Mens Plate Cup in a final that was competitive for long periods of time.  Newry travelled with a full bench while North Star came into the final with only six available.  Newry started the brighten in the first period, however North Star grew into the game and lead after the first period 12-10.  Into the second, Newry came out of the blocks quickly with a 10 point unanswered run to open up a 20-12 lead, however following a TO and some tactical adjustments, North Star came back into period to lead it Newry ahead 25-22.

North Star did not learn their lesson from the second period and at the opening of the 3rd, Newry took control to open up at 40-24 lead with 5:18 left in the period.  After a TO North Star tightened up on defence, however they could not get their offence going and Newry led 42-26 going into the 4th.

Into the 4th and North Star staged a fight back to reduced the gap to 8 with 4:58 left in the period, 44-36, however Newry reasserted themselves in the closing minutes to secure the win and take the Plate Final 56-45


A number of contenders across both teams for MVP, however the panel decided that Paul Crawley for Newry was Mr MVP on the day as he led his team to the win.
